Rosemarie's
Journey
In search of the people
How do you tell a Christmas story when an ideal world no longer feels credible?
In 2020, the pandemic dominated everyday life. Ignoring it in a festive city-centre installation would have felt evasive; making it the spectacle would have felt inappropriate.
The task was to acknowledge the present without beautifying it — and still create a public experience that offered warmth, humour and genuine hope.

A small mouse goes looking for the people.
Rosemarie, the famous mouse from Lübeck's St Mary's Church, wonders where all her visitors have gone. She sets off through the Hanseatic cities to find them.
Across ten shop windows, she meets people finding constructive ways through a difficult time: they sew masks, cook together, make music, read and learn. The mouse becomes an observer — and the audience recognises itself in her discoveries.
The crisis does not disappear. But the way we look at it changes.

Ten windows. One journey. A city becomes the stage.
The narrative begins at the tourist information by the Holstentor. From window to window, Rosemarie's perspective creates a connected trail through Lübeck — with stories, graphics, objects and audio dramas working as one experience.
Stories by Simon Urban and illustrations by Oliver Maraffa give each station its own voice and visual identity.
At the European Hansemuseum, the journey reaches its warm conclusion: Rosemarie returns with discoveries from the Hanseatic cities and the certainty that people can create something good even under difficult conditions.
